The goal of the program is to bring together responsible business representatives who see the opportunities for their companies to develop and improve respecting environmental, social and economic challenges at the national, regional and global levels.
Receiving a certificate of responsible business ambassador and presenting further anti-trafficking initiatives related to involvement of businesses and corporate social responsibility Lasma Stabina, the National Anti-Trafficking Coordinator, Ministry of the Interior highlighted that labour exploitation and trafficking in human beings are not adequately recognized and addressed, it is a corporate crime motivated by financial profit. It is utmost to involve both law enforcement agencies and the private sector in order to tackle the problem of trafficking in human beings in comprehensive and holistic way. The trafficking in human beings is driven by possibilities to profit at many levels, and companies that benefit from human trafficking are not only illegal, it is often a chain of legitimate businesses that engage in human trafficking, both knowingly and unknowingly. The construction, infrastructure, agriculture and services sectors are often known by long and complex supply chains which can be used to hide labour exploitation and illicit financial flows.
Implementing the project FLOW “Flows of illicit funds and victims of human trafficking: uncovering the complexities” it is planned that the business risk management tools will be done together with national business representatives in order to validate the CSR guidelines and enhance their knowledge on risks related to labour exploitation.
FLOW project partners include European Institute for Crime Prevention and Control, affiliated with the United Nations (HEUNI) from Finland, The Center for the Study of Democracy (CSD) from Bulgaria, the University of Tartu from Estonia and Ministry of Interior of Latvia; co-funded by the European Union’s Internal Security Fund — Police. #FLOW_THB
